Iteriad Managing Director

Biography in brief

Karen is a Chartered Landscape Architect and Design Manager. She is a highly motivated professional with over 35 years experience in the industry. She is a founding director of Iteriad in practice since 2012. Whatever gets thrown at Karen she takes it in her stride and she always strives to deliver a first class service to all her clients. She is not only a great leader and communicator but a true team player. Her particular skills are leading the delivery of projects and coordinating the multidisciplinary design process. She is currently working with a number of NHS Trusts and PSCP contractors delivering a portfolio of important mental healthcare projects. These include New Park House Mental Health Unit at North Manchester General Hospital, A Learning Disabilities Low Secure Unit at Maghull Health Park Liverpool and a Dementia Care Unit at Dorothy Pattison Hospital Walsall.

   

She previously worked at BDP in Manchester as the Landscape Architect Director with responsibility for the landscape profession workload across the three northern BDP offices of Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield. Karen was also Quality of Life Director representing the Manchester office. 

Her commissions at BDP included a number of large-scale retail, education and healthcare and sensitive heritage projects, as well as high profile public realm schemes and environmental assessment work. In particular she led teams on many complex and challenging projects to successful delivery. Notable projects include Liverpool One, Cathedral Gardens Manchester, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, White Rose Centre Leeds and the Swanwick Air Traffic Control Centre Hampshire.   

 

Previous to BDP Karen worked at Urbis Planning Design Group in Hong Kong from 1982-1984.

Awards

With BDP Karen led the external works design and delivery on many of the projects that received various industry environmental awards including:

  • Sir George Grenfell Baines Award for a public space design for Cathedral Gardens

  • Cathedral Gardens, Manchester – BCSC Award, RICS Award, Civic  Trust Award, Civic Society Award

  • Liverpool One and Chavasse Park - RIBA Stirling Prize (Shortlisted 2008), BALI Grand Award, LI Award

March 2026: We're pleased to be working with Gilling Dod Architects on two new PICU mental healthcare projects in Shrewsbury and West Bromwich.

 

Matthew Speight will be on the Construct Manchester panel on 26th March to talk about his involvement as part of the design team in the masterplanning of the River Avon Precinct,Christchurch, New Zealand following the earthquake there in 2011. 

 

January 2026: We've been appointed by Lancaster University to design the landscape around the new extension and the existing Ruskin Collection building. An appropriate project for Iteriad (meaning 'journey' based on John Ruskin's story)!

December 2025: We're pleased to be working with University of Lancashire extending the design of the public realm treatment leading from the Vet School into the wider campus. 

 

November 2025: Our landscape scheme at Water Meadow View Learning Disabilities in patient unit is now complete. Photos will be posted in early Summer 2026 when it has all greened up.

 

September 2025: We're pleased to have been appointed on a number of exciting new projects including projects at Christie Hospital, Stoke Mandeville Hospital and St Georges Hospital Stafford.

 

June 2025: We are really proud to have won the DIMHN Award 2025 for Outside Space of the Year at North View Mental health Hospital for GMMHT. An amazing project to be involved in. We created 22 outdoor spaces including a major public arrival space with our designed sculptural ribbon feature.

May 2025: Humber NHSFT have appointed the design team for their new 18 bed female MH unit at Humber Willerby Hill site together with the overall site masterplan. Iteriad are part of GDA's team working on the project.

 

April 2025: We're pleased to be appointed to Vinci IHP for the site infrastructure landscape works at Airedale Hospital working with AHR, Curtins and CAD21. 

 

March 2025: Old Quadrangle University of Manchester.Congratulations to Matt and the team for winning three awards at the U of Man Estates & Facilities Outstanding Contributions Awards 2025.

 

March 2025 Design in Mental Health Awards 2025. We're pleased to hear that our North View project has been shortlisted in this year's Outdoor Space of the Year. The awards results will be announced at the DIMHN Conference in June.

 

February 2025: Great news to hear our North View state-of-the-art mental health inpatient hospital project won Best Specialist or Dementia Care Design at the Healthcare Design Awards 2025. We're pleased to have been part of the fantastic team working with GMMHT, IHP, Gilling Dod Architects and the whole design and contractor team who delivered the project.

January 2025: We're pleased to be working with Gilling Dod Architects developing the first phase design at the Outwards site Queens Hospital Burton upon Trent.
